Today I drove from Ashland Wi to Duluth Mn, and I made an attempt to “hyper mile” my 328xi. Not that I was driving exactly 55, or rolling through stop signs, and I also did zero preparation. I even had my roof racks on, but I was a lot more careful with the skinny pedal Than I normally am, and I kept it in 6th almost the whole trip even though small towns with lower speed limits. The highest the average hit at any given time was 35.6 and this was the end result. I also averaged 57.7mph. And was cruising at 64 on the highway and 75 when I hit the 5 miles of freeway I get. Yes there are places where you have to drive a hour to get on a freeway.

Not to bad for a 3500lb, AWD, car with a naturally aspirated engine.

And no I don’t have a check engine light, that’s only because I hit the start button without the clutch in, which is the only way to see that screen without the engine running. The brake warning light is real tho... pretty sure it’s due to a missing ware sensor.

It get decent gas while it’s cruising but my 335ix sure can guzzle it if you keep in it. I don’t really look at my mpg too much but the lowest I have seen was around 12. My usual average is probably mid 20s.

I drove mostly in town, although my new job will change that. But before I reset the average when I left, it was at 20.6. And that wa an average over probably 15 gallons. But my drive to work is 1 mile with 4 stops and that is a good description of most of my driving.

I can try to hypermile all I want with my Legacy. It just gives me the automotive equivalent of flipping me the bird, and I get 20mpg or lower.

Stick as close to 50-55mph as possible on back roads? Nope. Make as much of my trip highway miles as possible and abuse the cruise control? Nope.

The problem is more from my car cranking 2500-3000rpm at those speeds, despite having tech from around the era of the gas embargo.

you must using one of these - https://www.tornadoair.com/ !

(Seriously - that is pretty darn spectacular. I never got near that in my Mazda 3 with the 2.3 MZR.)

My 528i goes from 19 around town to low 30s on the highway. I’ve never seen such a big disparity in any other car’s city and highway economy.

Yup it’s a huge challenge to acccelorate without the MPG needle going under 15. But I did it today

Do you have the 4 speed Auto? Because that could be the problem.

It’s an Outback, so yea - you can’t get them with the stick.

It would have helped if Subaru didn’t put in an astronomically short final drive...

Yeah that 4 speed was used way longer than it should have been. Into like 2010 I think. The Newer CVTs can get over 30.

The 4EAT is an awful transmission, but apparently it’s a little better if you plan to drag race if you want a bit more of an upper limit as to how much torque you can dump through it.

I only wish Subaru would give a little more power to the modern Impreza and XV.
